I have aprox. $2,000 in my 55 reef and 135 aggressive. This does not include any of my freshwater tanks. That 2 grand is just the begining I still have another grand to go before I will have the two saltwater tanks where I want them. It is not cheap or for the faint of heart. Do not skrimp on anything or you will pay for it in the long run!
For my 80G, $700 for the tank, $400 for the stand, $10 per 10lb's of live sand= $80, $100 for fluval filter, plus coral decorations, plus fish, plus other misc. things you will need, I plan to get a protein skimmer soon; another $120. Don't let the $$$ discourage you, this hobby is so rewarding, it truly opens a whole new world!
LOTS AND LOTS OF $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Can't give anywhere near the real cost. All I can say is READ ALOT & make good decisions to spend the least amount of money!!!!
these are all approx numbers..
- 9,000 clam/sps/soft REEF
- 11,000 REEF
- 3,000 FO/LR
- 4,500 experiment tank
Most of the money in these tanks was spent on Live rock and Lights, Not to mention reactors, chillers, and skimmers.. to much money!!!
I've spent far more than I have...I'm in college and I have a 6.50 part time job...Not enough to pay for a fish!!! Oh well, that's what credit cards are for.

i am also in college. my 135 reef has cost me like 4 grand at this point. (i do not want to even think about the total i have spent on this hobby) it is wellestablished, but i know a retailer so i get good prices. make friends in the business. there are always hook ups to be had.
honestly though, my friends think i am crazy but i kid you not they all stop by to see how the tank is doing. I wake up and my room mates are just watching the tanks. if you are new stay small. the biggest i would thing of is like a 70. i went into shock when i totaled out how much my tank cost me.
well about 6 months ago i actually wrote up a sheet on how much i have spent on my 55 reef alone and when it got to $1800 i stopped counting. So now i am sure it is way over 2000. It seems like it isnt that much at first but add it up. on second thought, don't add it up and it wont be such a big deal.
