I started this thread to help me find out what some people have payed for their aquariums, so i have an idea of what a good price is.

What Size Are U Looking At Getting? My 55g I Spent On Water/lights/tank/canopy/ls/lr Was Around 1500 Before Inverts And Fish

I paid $100 for my 55gal drilled tank, lots of used equipment (skimmer, pumps, plumbing, etc) & a 30ish gal sump, and a few bags of salt. My hubby built me a stand and we built a hood, then I've slowly been collecting all of the more expensive stuff ever since. Including fish, rock, sand, lights, food, I probably have about $1,000 in it now. The classifieds are a GREAT place to look if you don't want to spend full price and don't mind having used equipment. There are always people getting out of the hobby who will sell complete setups for a very small fraction of their original cost.

$600 for used 135g with solid oak stand/canopy, mediocre lighting, sump, external heater + UV sterilizer, 100lb+ base rock and basically everything to run a saltwater tank. Got it from Craigslist.
That tank is not drilled, so we ended up ordering a new AGA 150g tank for $600 delivered to the house.

My corner bow front 60 gallon was 500 new with nice black and chrome stand. The lights are 150 with homemade canopy. 60 lbs of live rock is probable around 350$. sand was about 65. and coral and fish costs are ridiculous!!!

paid 400 just on 36" MH lights and 300plus just on rock. Just on my 92 corner I have at the least 2500 into just the set up. Now I am adding corals at 30 to 80 a pop. I just started a new 45 too so let's not even go there yet

Let just say A LOT MORE THAN YOU THINK!!

For my 240 with tank, stand, canopy, sump/refugium, 4x175 watt halides and 4x65 watt actinic pc's plus skimmer I paid $1000. How could I pass that up, plus the guy I bought it from set it all up for me

We paid $75 for our 55 gal. used - came with emporer filter, hood, light, live sand, and a wrasse. We only had to buy the stand to go ahead and get it going. That was about three years ago, since then we have purchased a variety of different fish, live rock, and the cost is never ending (we have considered selling it a couple of times, but overall we do enjoy the hobby, if we do get out of it, it will be purely for financial reasons.)
Good luck with your experience, you learn more than you ever thought you would as you get into it.

Worth it just to have someone else do the set up

I have $1006 in mine so far if I'm not forgetting anything. It's a 50 gallon acrylic I found used with some equipment for $200 (came with flourescent light, a fluval filter that doesn't work, a couple of pond pumps, a heater, and some cool shells). I also found live rock for $3/lb used, it was in a huge tank for 10 years, so they told me, has some really cool shapes and nice algae. Then I bought a few things as cheaply as I could find them on a "buy it now" basis on that one...uh, site. Including shipping:
AquaC remora skimmer: $165
Magnum HOT filter: $60
Two Koralia 2 powerheads: $65
Also bought an unfinished stand and finished it myself with stain and polyurethane high-gloss finish, looks awesome. I just bought a little clown and some hermits for it--I can't help but just sit and stare at them!

Just to add, I would say that if I wasn't such a perfectionist and didn't have to have "the best" and such, I could have saved a lot of money by finding someone with a complete setup that they were desperate to get rid of cheap. That's the way to save the most money if that is an issue for you. Even so, I do lots of research and comparison shopping before buying anything, so I know I'm getting a low price and won't decide I need to "upgrade" later.
Used will save you some bucks, but then it can also be a waste if you don't know what you're getting. For example, part of the reason I bought the tank and paid what I did for it was that I thought it was coming with a working Fluval. Turned out the Fluval leaked and made a wierd thrashing noise, so I just decided to toss it and buy a new Magnum filter that I liked better. So I lost out a little on that one.
Do your homework and you'll be fine!
