With tanks, upgrades, coral, fish, inverts, supplies, live/base rock, sand, etc, I'd say I've spent at least $4000 on going from a 12g to a 55g to a 180g DT, and setting up a 20L frag tank w/T5 lights and 29g QT... and that's being conservative. If I really priced out how much I've spent I'd probably get a little depressed.

The 180g was my most recent setup, it still doesn't have fish in it yet (fish are all in QT in 2 different tanks) and I'd estimate total cost for that was around $2300, and it's a used setup - though it's got a 4x 175w MH and 4x 160w VHO lighting, Octopus skimmer, the stand/canopy is cherry wood (beautiful quality), digital heating controller, and more....

If you are not in any hurry and willing to do some looking around, you can find some very good deals.
I purchased my 125(for Discus) for $125.00 with a metal stand, glass tops, and just normal lighting. I then built a Oak stand and purchased a 175 gal (new)wet/dry filter for around $250.00.
A picture of the un-completed stand. Wish I would have taken pics from start to finish
2nd pic is a sort of completed pic. As soon as the weather warms up I am going to build a canopy.

My wife got this tank a 29 gal at a garage sale for $23.00. It came with the stand, heater, tank, lights and a Whisper 40 filter.
We also got our 20 gal QT and a garage sale and it was FREE !
It had lights and top
So like I said,if your patient there are some good deals to be had.
I picked yp a Oceanic 75 gal drilled tank, lights,Oak stand,CLR filter and about 100 lbs of live rock for $200.00,on the bay. The guy was about 20 minutes from my house

I agree, I got my 110g and nice stand for a total of $200. My brother in-law made my canopy (he's a cabinet maker), for free.
However, there's no telling how much I've watched swim away.

Hintz...As you may be realizing. The tank, canopy and stand are the 'cheapest' part of the hobby. It is everything else that you spend the money on. That is why there is little mark up for those items because LFSs
know that the real profit is in what people put in their tanks.

I have various tanks, two nano's and a 100g. The nano's were the expensive tanks as they are reefs and I have put an excess of 3k total in to both of them. But then I wanted a big tank and was no longer 'rich' so I did it on the cheap. Dont get me wrong people know me, and my apartment smells of leather bound books and rich mahogany, but I got my 100g up and running for $250, total. then I went and spent another 60 or so bucks on fish and currently have 5 fish, 80 - 90lbs of LR, sump, overflow, powerheads, lighting, heater and some other extras. I can safely say that I will never buy anything thats not a deal again. So dont be discouraged in tank price, the deals are out there.

The tank itself will probably end up being the cheapest and most expensive part all in one. Cheapest out the door price, most expensive once you find out how much all the other stuff that goes with it will put you back. Lights, Rock, Substrate, pumps, skimmer, plumbing, etc.... It all adds up real fast in this hobby.
