No it's not 1" for every 5gal. It is 1" of fish per gallon of water. But at times that seems to be crowded for me so I like to do 1" of fish per 2 gallons of water.

well, what size tank do you have and what fish? I think 1" per gallon is too much, but you could do more than 1" per 5 gallons.....more importantly is the actual fish that you have. a 10 inch triggerfish is going to make a lot more waste than 5 2in clownfish, or 10 neon gobies....so the type of fish is a lot more important than "inches per gallon"....but the more you have, the more work you're probably going to have to do to keep the water chemistry right and everything clean

I strongly (ok very strongly) suggest you start the hobby slowly and stock your tank with no more than 1" of fish per 5 gallons of capacity. Add up the adult size of the fish, not the size you buy it at.
After you've got a few years under your belt and you can recognize stress you might be able to try pushing that guideline.
Most saltwater hobbiests fail the first time and it's almost always due to overstocking.
Just my $0.02 worth :)

That's when you can walk by your tank an notice something isn't quite right without testing.
It's your tank :) I'm just giving my opinions. Eels obviously don't follow the same guideline as other fish. Your question might get a more accurate response in the Aggressive Forum. I'm not up on my aggressives.

How often should I be feeding my guys???
1 True Percula Clown
1 Yellow Tang
1 Blue Damsel
1 Green Chromis
1 Firetail Gobie
1 Flame Angel
1 B/W Damsel
1 Condylactus
1 Serpinitine Starfish
1 Emerald Crab
1 Sally Lightfoot
1 unknown crab that just appeared (Very Small
8 Tiny blue legged hermits
10 (mix) of Nassarius - Turbo/Astrea
Still new to the game and do not want to over feed. These are still all very small fish. I would hate to over feed and cause a fluctuation in the tank balance:eek: !!!

eevn when people say 1" per 5 gallon i say they are right. BUT it all depend un you filtering system, and if your tank is mature or not. i have seen tank with 1" per gallon and even 1" and a half per gallon and they are more succesful than some tank with only 1" per 5 gallon.
it also depend on the specie. a 12" eel will produce more waste than a school of 4 green chromis
you need to do a research on each specie you want.
right now this are the fish i have on my tank after selling the on that a had.
1 Snowflake Eel
3 green chromis
2 black onyx percula clowns
1 Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish
1 flame angel
1 yellow watchman. (the eel still dont now he is in the tank. but when he found out, that is gonna be an expencive meal)
right now i hvae 36" of fish. and the eel is only 12" but i will grow 12 more inches.
but this is my filtering system.
175 wet/dry w/10lbs of LR in it.
Berlin H.O. Skimmer
45 lbs of LR in tank
3 inches LSB
now im getting a 20g sump to replace teh wet/dry
water parameter in my tank
temp 72*
PH 8.2
ammonia 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
nitrate - 10ppm

why do u what 2 get rid of the wet dry if u have no problems with it how would the sump help more, can u have them both 2gether.

i will like to use both at the same time but my sump is huge. it is for a 175g tank. an my tank is only 75 so you can imagine how much space it take bellow the tank. that the onlny problem i have with it. even whe i have 36" in a 75g i have been able to maintain the water quality

first who said here that i have problem with the nitrate. the highest nitrate i have seen in my tank is 10ppm. second if you are telling me i havent make anyresearch, the talk with the ORCA Oraganization. my tank was setup with the help of them

hwe i say i have 36" i never say that that is the full grown in per gallon i will have. the eel will grow 12 more inches and i will have 48". i think you are talking to much .. and you even read what i write. like i say the only fish that is not full grown is the eel. and who said that i have a tang?:notsure:
i think you should read, think and do a reseach of my tank before talking like that. if you are mad becasue i didnt follow the "rule of thumbs" well thats is not my problem. right now i have a succesfull tank with out rule. all the fishs in teh tank are doing great.
btw being a succesful aquarist doesnt and not thinking the same way you do doesnt mean im an idiot
