I would imagine that's too much light. 10 watts per gallon. Depending on what you want to do you would want 3-6 (or so) watts per gallon. I have a 36 watt bulb on my 12 gallon and soft corals do great in it.

That will be too much light for some corals, but all in all it should be fine. I'd wonder more about the length of the lights compared to the length of the tank than I would the wattage.

i dont know alot about sps but i do know they are harder than softies and more needy. the water has to be perfect and things like that so with a smaller tank it is hard to do that because it can change easier.

You will be fine with that much light. You will be able to keep softies in there as well as LPS corals. Even SPS would probably do alright. Keep the softies towards the bottom of the tank and SPS at the top. You may want to see if anyone would be interested in trading for a shorter light that fits better over your tank. Good luck.

Softies- for the most part easy to care for. Lighting not a huge issue.
LPS (Large Polyp Stony)- little bit more advanced little more light. (Hammer coral, Open Brain coral, Bubble coral are examples)
SPS (Small Polyp Stony)- Advanced coral for the most part. Requires the most light. Optimum water quality. (Acropora, Millipora, Staghorn, Montipora are examples)
You can get so much info about each one of these corals online. I suggest you research about each type before jumping in to reefing.
