I have a 14 Biocube i am setting up. How much LR rubble have u guys put in the area where the bioballs are? Do u just take out all the bioballs and place the LR in there?
Put as much LR as you can fit, w/o bringing waterflow to a standstill, the more the better. And yes, if this is a new tank, just pull all the bioballs out and replace w/LR. If its an established tank, replace the bioballs with LR gradually.
you can usually get rubble from a LFS at $2.00 / lb. If you have a good relationship with the LFS when you make a purchase ask for a handful and tell them what you are doing. They should throw it to you free.
The size depends on the size of your compartment, but it should be a little bit smaller than a golf ball. You want rubble not pebbles so that it fouls up your powerheads.
fairly new to saltwater myself have a question about LR in filter instead of bio-balls.
I have a 14 G biocube. The guy at LFS said rock in filter won't get enough light and will
turn to mush before long. This didn't sound good for tank? Any suggestions?
Thanks tomtown
It's my understanding that the beneficial biproduct of the rubble doesn't need light for the filteration. I can say that the rock won't turn to "mush" as light doesn't affect the make up of the base rock.
