hey guys, i got a zoa frag.. about 10 polyps. i was having hard time attaching with epoxy. i took it out of the water several times.. and one of two polyps on side must have been crushed. does this mean whole frag will die? in general how much of manhandling does zoa withstand?

they can stand quite a bit. The polyps that were crushed may die, but the rest should be ok. next time, just use superglue gel

They're pretty durable... the last time I fragged some out of my tank I just grabbed and pulled/ripped.

what is everyone talking about superglue gel?? i am used to using epoxy (putty kinda thing). but it doesnt work with kinda live rock i wanna attach to. (my base LR is very smooth). Will i have better luck with superglue gel? where do i find it? can i find that in local hardware store? will it bind underwater.. (meaning i can put the glue and submerge the frag under water?? wont the superglue harden instantaneously?can anyone post the link so i can see the pic and then go find (that way i know what i am looking for)

and how long did it take? how fast do they grow. is it matter of weeks, months or years?

You can get super glue gel and like Lowe's. Get "super glue gel" not something like gorilla glue. The main ingredient you're looking for is "cyano acrylic" I believe unless I spelled it wrong.
I googled it : cyanoacrylate
It gel's almost instantly when in contact with water so it's a bit tricky to work with but this is what you want for softies over the epoxy.

growth rates differ with each individual frag. i have some that never grow new polyps and some that spread like weeds. for example, i got a frag of mary janes and a frag of pinks six months ago. the pinks have gone crazy, the mary janes have grown one polyp.

if I am going to attch a small frag rock underwater, I get the frag, dry the bottom, put a big glob of glue, (know exactly where you are going to place it before hand) quickly put the frag on the rock in the water, twist it so it breakes the film that develops from the water. Hold it there a few seconds.

zoas can be dangerous, so I hope you are wearing gloves and goggles. They give off a toxin when you mess with them. Also wash your hands really good afterward...touching your mouth, nose or eyes could be trouble.
Anyway here is a picture of the glue I use. Look at the ingredients and match it with others on the market.

zoas arent usually that bad in regards to palytoxin, but yeah, dont stick corals in your mouth as a general rule and you should be cool.

Sorry I posted the wrong picture, here is the ingredients listed on the back.
Also Alex, you are being a snot to have said what you did, the way you did. Wearing gloves and not touching any orifice before washing is basic safety. You don't have to suck on a coral to get sick. I know your young, but still its unnecessary rudeness.

you can use super glue from the grocery store as well.if your putting a plug in so it would basically be rock on rock then use epoxy JBwaterweld works well. but if your clueing actual zoas to the rock use super glue. but i also have some smaller live rock that i glue them to so you i have to try and super glue something under water.
as far as zoas you dont really need to be all that concerned about palytoxins. but there are plenty of other bacteria that a person COULD get sick from so as flower stated wearing powder free gloves is a good idea as well as some type of safty glasses and washing up when y our done is a good idea.

Spanko said the same thing about super glue....He is a guy I really trust, but I am wondering if the regular super glue has the exact same ingredients as the fish safe stuff.
Things react to saltwater over time because it is really corrosive. The reef safe stuff has only one ingredient listed, what about the over the counter regular stuff, do you have some on hand to look at and compare?
I don’t have any to compare and I really would like to know, there is so much money tied into the tank…I would hate to poison it saving a dollar.

no i tossed the package it came in away and no incredients on the tubes but i buy 4 tubes for 1.59 at the hard ware store. and its the same stuff thats been in my tank since i started working with corals over a year ago. the reason i dont like working with super glue in the tank is i have had little balls of glue roll off the rock( prolly didnt let it sit long enough to get a good hold on the rock) but if a fish were to grab it thinking its food that wouldnt be a good outcome!
