It never hurts to have more flow depending on what your stocking one reef I read about one that turned over 65 times per hour

I swear by Sequence pumps, but the big question is what can your overflows handle and what type of head pressure are you looking at as well?

Whenever I setup my 180g I plan on getting a Mag 18 pump. You can always use a ball valve to reduce/increase flow.

reef.with fish that are safe. my 180 is drilled.so there will be no overflows. Are we saying that I cant have to much flow? Will it hurt pumps to use a ball valve to slow the flow?

No. I know experienced reefers who use them.

If the tank is drilled you'll still have overflows of some sort....You need to know wht size drains you'll have and how many and then determine what your head pressure will be, what type of corals are you planning on keeping as well. You don't want to get all your flow through your main return pump additional flow can be added other ways......

Agreed
I also have 3 MJ1200 mods on the way and my overflow spouts should give more flow as well. The return pump should only be a portion of your turnover rate.

Hey Tacoma,
I agree with acry on sequence pumps. These are quite/energy efficient/reliable and powerful. I chose this pump to get plenty of turn over and movement. I do not like using powerheads becasue of the extra heat and just the overall look..... Do not put a ball valve on the inlet but is ok on the out.
Dart sequence pump

Okay - most overflows are rated at about 600 g/h. You have one in each corner. So you will be draining around 1200 g/h. If your head hieght is just from sump pump to overflow you are probably dealing with 4 - 5 feet of head height. So buy a pump that will do at least that! Think of 180 X 15 as a goal. So your main return pump plus 3 or 4 PH's should get you up around 3000 g/h total movement. Hope this helps.

Really your turnover rate depends on what your planning on keeping in the tank.....Mainly softies or SPS?

Yes I want corals, but i want to wait till the tank is settled and i know everything is all right.I do not have two overflows,it has one in the center. It does have two spray nozzles in the corner, one per corner.I have seen pics on here where they run two outlet at overflow and run pvc to to both sides of tank for nozzles. Can i,will that work for me?Thanks

Your using the Dart for your main pump???? You can add additional flow to your tank or any other tank by adding a CL.....Being that you have an acrylic tank it is super easy to modify and drill additional holes in the tank to accomodate your needs.....How big is your sump for the 180?

I have a 180 gallon set up as a reef with a 75 G refugium. I would be glad to share my experiences with you. I did not drill the 75 - return pumps are in last created chamber.
