ive had my 125 for a while now and im setting up a 180 and im going to raise my 125 on a platform and use it as a gravity feeding refugium to the main 180. my question is how much sand do i need for my 180 to get the desired 4" bed? i have it in my 125 now but its been a while and i have no idea how much i used. the 180 is 72"by24" .
Thanx

I just filled my 125. I used 60 lbs of ls,and 120 lbs of Yardright. I have a 4-6 inch depth. So, if you have a 180 I would guess that 250 - 270 lbs of sand would do the trick.

72x24x4x.0579=400.2048 lbs sand for 4" DSB
...so about 400 lbs sand:cool:

That 400 seemed a bit much, but I used your formula to reverse calculate my tank. Looks like its dead on. Is the LxWxDx0.0579 a constant? I like it if it is.

thanx i appreciate it.... i have 240lbs of live sand coming in saturday... what kind of cheap sand should i use for the other 160 lbs?
thanx for the replies

Southdown play sand from Home Depot. Great stuff if you can find it. You may have some luck being in the Northeast!
Good Luck!
