Depends on what part of the Country you are in, but around here I have seen it as high as 6.99 to 7.99/lb. You can buy it online a lot cheaper, but then imagine what the shipping cost would be with all that weight.

It can be really expense in your lfs, much cheaper online. The rock at my lfs is like $7/lbs., so I ordered mine online when there was a free shipping offer. That expired, but I'm sure there is some out there.
Info on how to make your own- Search for DIY Live Rock on this forum. There should be at least a couple threads (I know of one...but I'm sure there is more) that give you instruction.

my lfs was kinda cheap so I went with them. $3.00 lb uncured and unopened in boxes. $4.50 cured. I bought two 50 lb boxes for $275. I got a great deal.

i like the idea of diy live rock. ive seen some people who make these amazing aquascapes through it because you can do stuff that doesnt look natural with rock tied together, like arches and pillars. its also better for the environment and saves a lot of gas. if you're patient enought to wait a small amount of lr to seed it, then its a great idea.

If you buy good cured rock around here from the LFS it sells for between 7.99-10.99 per pound!! If you want to wait and cure it yourself of course its allot cheaper, but allot of people (like me
) don't want to wait or deal with the die off from shipping, so we get ripped off

Different kinds are different prices. Tonga is usually expensive, where haitian rock is cheaper. Mostly ive seen it in fish stores from $5-$9 a pound. I bought mine on craigslist. I found a guy selling a complete tank setup w/90 pounds of live rock in it. I offered him $180 for just the rock and he took it. I'd try to work a deal like that before payin by the pound.

I bought 50lbs of Walt SMith Prem Fiji off e bay shipped from FL to NY for 155 total. The rock in awsome shape, precured, minor rubble, and after 3 weeks I got a sponge and some other stuff growing on it already. It also had a bunch of small coralline spots on it as well.

the going rate around here is usually dependent on how much you buy but start at $6.99ish. Usually $6.99 from 1-10lb, $5.99 11-19lbs and then $4.99 for 20+lbs. there are some local shops that are $5 and change regardless.
It cost me about $5/lb with overnight shipping online BUT I dont think I'll ever do it again (first time recently. always bought local before). mail order liverock from a reputable source is usually cheaper and actually better quality from what I've gotten locally BUT two things I like from my rock a) cured and b) hand selected by ME! For me thats worth the extra $1-2 per lb. Now that might not matter if your buying 100lbs where your going to get all kinds of sizes and shapes but when your buying 20lbs which only amounts to 5-6 or so good size pieces I like to hand pick each and every one. I like cured because I'm impatient and now I'm in the process of having the 1rst cycle I've had in years using shipped rock. If I had bought local cured rock I'd already have livestock by now.

Like everybody has said, there are so many things that can affect the price of LR. Your best bet is to buy it from another reefer who is getting out of the hobby. If you can get your hands on Marshall Island rock, go for it. That rock is no longer available for collection. I got lucky and got 60lbs of MI from a fellow reefer who took down his tank.

Just got back from a lfs in Durham, NC. They had a decent supply of Indonesian lr for, get this, $9.00/lb. This is totally rediculous. I have mostly Indo. lr and it shouldn't be anywhere near that. And their's was covered with aptasia.
Just an example of how you can get ripped off at the lfs. They probably just got this in from a local person who was breaking down his tank due to an outbreak of aptasia. They probably got it from him for $1/lb.
