How Much Work?

I am 100% new to this hobby. I am looking at purchasing a 55 gal. tank. I have decided that I would like to have a reef tank. How much maintenance will be involved? I have heard, "not much, just change 5 gallons of water every two weeks", "oh man, it's an every day event", and "it's not worth it". I like to "tinker" with things so maintenance isn't really that big of deal to me.
What do all of you think? Thanks in advance!

Well, a big part of it is setup. If you set up your tank exactly as you want it, then maintainance is on the low side...after cycling, of course. But, if you set it up without researching all the available options, and just do a "get by" setup, then of course the maintainance gets kicked up a notch. A properly set up tank will run itself...except for water changes, feeding, and supplements, if you choose/need to add them People vary how and when they do water changes. Some do twice a month, some once a month, and some a lot longer...although I can't say it helps their system;) . Is it complicated...yes, can you do it...yes, is it an everyday event...yes because you won't be able to take your eyes off of it, is it worth it.....YES, YES, YES!!!!!!:D
Here's a link to get you started. Welcome, and good luck. This board will be your best source of information. Don't listen to the fish store employees....unless they coincide with the information you get here. Everyone here wants you to have a great system...and most of the time we agree on the best way to get it...even if we don't, you'll still get better information here, and you'll find out really quickly who to listen to, and who not to listen to...Hint: high post numbers are not the way to distinguish who knows what they are talking about. Welcome aboard!!

I also have a 55gal tank and I would like to try to encourage you to go with a standard 75 instead. Reason being is that some where down the road you will want to add a sump. With a 55 you are very limited to what will fit under your tank( in the stand). The additional 6 inches in depth will allow you to be a lot more flexible in your decision of sump whether it be another tank or a rubbermaid container. I had to build an acrylic sump for mine. Would have been a lot easier to just buy a container. Of course the 75 will cost more but I think the additional costs will be recouped in the long run. I think the 75 allows more creativity when placing your rocks. Just my thought.

patience is the key here...you may take 6 to 12 months before you get your water conditions right. If you you have the money buy all the best stuff now. If you don't you will keep upgrading, buy this then buy this....your'e smart by looking now. GOOD luck and show some pics of your new tank:)
