How much live rock is recomended for a 90gl reef tank? I have about 30lbs I don't want it over crowded but about two thirds up. also can I have two or more cleaner shrimp? thnx
The rule of thumb ive read on this site is 1-2lb rock/per gallon. If money is an issue you can always buy 40-50 lbs LR and the rest can be base rock. This will be cheaper.
We have a 92g with 130 lbs. of live rock. why so much? it's a cheese-wedge shaped tank so there was plenty of room for the rock plus swimming room in the back corner and all around the front plus it means less problems overall to have that much rock. After 13 months with this tank, we have 8 fish now and plan to get 2 more. I recommend the more, the better.
I have a 75g with about 100lb LR in there and I'm about 2/3 up the height of the tank. It's not necessary the weight of the rock that matters, but the porous surface area of the rock. Marshall Island for example is lighter but has more surface area.
If you are going with a true reef tank, then I think you would want at least 120 lbs of live rock, or dry rock that turns into live rock. Live rock gives you great filtration and with a reef tank you want the best quality water you can. So the more LR the better.
For reference, I have a 65g with 105 bls of LR.
And you can definitely have two or even probably three cleaner shrimp. they get along with one another and are very active and personable.
