How often does your heater fail to work?

i woke up last night, temperature reading was a little below 70 degree. i freaked out, although corals and fish seen to be ok. my year old EBO Jager 200w just wasn't working. so i took out my previous Ebo (which sometimes have "electric leak" and shock my fish once) and got it to work. i have always set the temp at 77. i cleaned and washed the year old heater, and it seems to work fine sometimes, but often the light disappears and i have to shake the heater to get it back on. Now i just use my old one and put it in the sump, and i am afraid to shake it because it will electrocute the fish and my hand. Last time it did and all 12 fish were lying on sand instantly, luckily the stood up after 20 minutes. anyone has bad luck with heater?

Hi,
I use the EBO heaters and knock on wood i have yet to have a failure. If the heater shows signs of any problems i chuck them out quick.
I have 2 on each of my larger tanks, heaters are cheap compared to what damage they can cost. I stock up on them when the mail order places have sales.

Occasionally I've had problems with my heaters. I only use Ebo Jager. I usually have it set for mid-upper 70's. The other day it was a particularly cold morning so I decided to check my tank's temperature before I went to work. Sure enough it was around 72. The heater was off so I can't say that it was just underpowered.
For the most part though they are good heaters, you just have to check the temp to verify that they are working.

On New Year's Day, I woke up to my tank being over 90 degrees!! My Ebo Jager 150W was stuck on. My thermometer only goies up to 90, so I don't know how much above 90 it was. When I turned the heater nob, it turned off. I put ice cubes in zip lock bags and placed them in my filter. Once the tank went below 90, I let it cool on its own. What a day!
I ended up only losing my pink-tip anemone and horseshoe crab. My choc chic starfish was looking pretty bad, but he made it! Also, my yellow tang, clownfish, green brittle star, 3 stripe damsel and various snails/hermits survived.
I ordered a new heater and am now watching the tank very closely until it arrives.

thanks for reply, i set my at 77, but both EBO Jager heater lights turned off even when the reading is only at around 74, i have to shake the heater a bit to get it turn back on, but soon or later it's off again. does that mean both my heaters are bad? my temp reading is at top right side of tank, can that be misleading? this temperature variation is driving me nuts this week.
