Hi,
I'm 19, no kids, doing a Marine Science degree at University. With regards to tank equipment and what not, affording it on a student budget can be difficult at times. I get things in a few ways:
1. I stocked up on tank equipment before I started Uni so that I wouldn't have to buy it as I studied. And buy the best equipment the first time so you'll never have to replace or repair it.
2. Collect livestock and buy coral frags from other hobbyists rather than pieces from LFS or where ever.
3. Read and Read ond only keep animals with the highest rate of survivial in your system. Apart from the obvious death of the animals which isn't good it is also not good financially.
I also get as much stuff as I can through Uni, the LFS I work at, other people who work at LFS, etc. For example, I got 2x400-watt Metal Halides, reflector, ballast, bulb, everything $550 Australian (about $300 US). In a shop, I would have paid that much just for 1x150-watt.
Regards,
Tom

Woa this rocks! I'm the youngest here so far at 14!!! Coolness. And I love this site cuz the people here take me seriously even at this age. Most adults I know think people in thier early teens have nothing mature or interesting to say, but at least I do have experience with this hobby so newbies take me seriously and arn't embarassed about learing something from a highschooler. (Except my wonderful parents, I know it makes you sick to know I have great parents, but I tell the truth when I say I do, and plus they do sometimes buy me stuff for my tanks, but mostly I pay for it with my itty-bitty 10$ a week allowance!) That's why I've been stuck with freshwaters and fish-onlys for the 8 years I've had aquariums of my own (I could fully manage a 10gal freshwater all by myself when I was 7 yrs old.)

I am 29 and I don't miss being a teen so much. Because my budget was very limited during teens, I made a freshwater glass tank by myself. It was a disaster.
Being a grown up and having a great job, I don't think twice when spending money on my tank. Not that I don't miss being a teen or in early twenties, which by the way were best years, but its great to have finacial
independence... finally....

Hey SUNDOG....sorry it's been a while since i've been on. I live in Biloxi, but work at the Grand Casino in Gulfport. I love it here. It gets hot, though. i have to keep my AC on all the time just to keep my tank below 80 deg. Your friend sounds like he has a cool job. L8R

Percman, I'm 16 and working at albertsons to raise money for a 55g reef. My parents will buy me the lighting for xmas though. It will still cost me 700+ dollars for this tank. But today is another payday and my bank account is growing by the week.
