how safe are pistol shrimp?

Lately I've been considering getting a pistol shrimp and a couple gobies to see if I could get the symbiosis between them. I've heard that pistol shrimp are predatory though and I don't like the idea of a $10 invert causing a lot of damage. Are there any species that make good reef inhabitants or are there any in particular to stay away from? If you've had success with these please let me know.

i have one in my fuge with a goby and no problems yet. albeit its not in the main tank and only some snails and the goby are in there with him, and he hasn't touched anything yet. he does dig alot under the lr so you would have to be careful about a collaspe. hth

I have three in that came as hitchikers in my LR. They are very, very shy. They have caused no trouble at all. The hairy crab HH, now thats another story....
