Just a little story....two days a go i noticed three seperate hermits (of the same species) congregating a piece of rock that my pink Zoa's came on (small branched dead coral)....thought nothing of it untill i got home yesterday and noticed the same three hermits right where they were the day before...Picked up thepiece of coral and noticed a very small hermit was lodged into the branches of this dead coral and couldn get out...i pried him away from his death bed and noticed he was the same species as the ones that had been therefor two days! I believe that they were trying to help him in some way....~FREE WILLY~!!!

my hermits are so smart they walk up the silicone in my tank until they reach the high current level in my tank and they go blowing into the substrate. But really cool storyi wonder if they could have gotten hime out.

i agree with wax...i watched one get stuck...and watched it get eaten...LOL nothing to laugh about really...but in nature that is what happens, and i don't interfere with it. the strong survive IMO.

LOL...u pessimists!!!

i think the congregation of the same species was interesting to me...I have numerous species of hermit crabs in my tank and the three blue legs were the only ones there to rescue their buddy~!

I put a sea shell I got from the beach in my tank....the shell is one of those very long skinny shells. It is 8 inches long and 1 and a half inches wide. I dropped it into the tank and had one of my hermits transfered into it instantly. It was absolutely hilarious.
The hermit could barely move the shell, but he stayed in it for 2 days, then figured out it would probably be smart to get a smaller shell.

Agreed...probably waiting for an easy meal

Hermits have a brain the size of a grain of sand...eat, sleep, molt, make little hermits is about all they can handle, and that's pushing it.

I have a handful of empty shells in my aquarium and my hermits line them up in a straight line all of the time. I can mess them up, and the next day they'll have lined them up again. Weird. Freaks my hubby out.
I also had a stubborn little hermit ride around on the back of my turbo snail for days, pull him out of his shell so he could occupy it, and eat him! Little booger! There were plenty of shells similar in size for him to choose from. He only stayed in the shell for 2 weeks.
I'm with the optimistic crowd. Your hermits were trying to save him!

Cleaner hermit crabs are a community species. While I won't go as far as to say that they were there to help the stuck hermit crab... they most definately enjoy the company of one another. Check out the tank at night with a flashlight. Many hermits even sleep in groups.
