I have been told that a the most dominate clown will become the female and the second most the male, and the rest will remain sexless. if i were to get a sexless fish and put it in a tank by its self, would it remain sexless, or become a female? the other two fish i am planning on having in the tank are a highfin goby and a firefish. does anyone know if it will remain sexless or will it become a female?

If it will never mate what difference could it make?

it could make a inch and a half to two inch difference. its going in a ten gallon tank.

My female is just a tiny bit bigger than the male, they are over 4 years old so they are not babies. 2 inches of fish is all they are, that 3/4th to 1/2 of an inch isn't enough to concern yourself with. A 10g tank is plenty for a clown, the are not constant swimmers. They like to hang out in one spot...I think they are boring fish to be honest. I would get a Dottyback for my 10g instead, at least they do something and go to different areas of the tank. That's just me...

My clowns are noticeably different sizes between the male and female. A clown by itself will swim around more than if it's a pair. When I kept one singly in my 14G, it swam all over, paired it up and it stuck to one corner with its mate. Those are the two that are now in my 155 that spawn like the world is ending.
I will say that I've noticed clowns tend to stay smaller when in smaller tanks. My two grew like crazy once they were moved from the 14 to a 40 and even more so when I shifted them to the 155.
Some of it is diet too.
If you did it right, you could keep the pair in the 10G, just a thought. Then you'd always know which was which.
I'm hoping you're only considering an Ocellaris or Percula clown in that size tank and not something like a Maroon.

i was planning on a true percula. I can get them from my work tank breed. just started there not to long ago. about three months. i just now started looking at fish after researching the water chem and whatnot. I would also like to do a high fin goby (antenna goby) which ever you fancy, and maybe a fire fish. not sold on the fire fish yet.

All nice choices..you have only one concern with them...the goby and firefish are called dart fish. These fish are realy bad for being jumpers, so make sure you have a really good top on a 10g tank because it is so shallow.

Yeah I knew that they would jump. the lid i have should be fine, unless they could swim against the current of my aquaclear 50 filter and manage to get between the filter and hood. But we'll see.
