If I use glass cleaner, I make sure the glass top in down and gently spray downward toward the floor so the mist doesn't spray.
Or, you can spray some glass cleaner right on to a paper towel and then wipe the glass.
Sometimes, I just take a wet paper towerl, wipe outer glass then dry.
I have never had a problem using any of the above methods. The key is to not have any chemicals, mist or fumes in the tank.

Supposedly the ammonia in the glass cleaner can cause an increase in you tank ammonia.

It is the concern of having a mist or film of any chemical enter the tank. Keep this in mind when you spray air freshners, have smokers over etc.
As long as things don't enter the tank, your ok.

if you really want to use something they make special aquarium cleaners, but i doubt it is much more than colored alcohol, but it could be worth a try

The best thing that you can clean you glass with is DI water, or if you use RO water that is good too. The reason for this is that the water does not have any minerals in it that can be left on the glass. What reason would you need to use anything else on your glass?
