I have an Icecap metal halide ballast that is dimmable. It has a grey and purple wire for dimming. Does anyone know how to do it? Do I need a pot or something else to dim it?

I wasn't aware that ice cap had made a dimmable halide ballast. Can you post a pic of this ballast? Typically the dimmable halide ballasts are not technically dimmable or at least not like leds are from what I understand. They come with a knob already built into the ballast box that allows you to toggle between pre determined wattage settings. For instance a 400w ballast may also be able to run 250w or maybe even 175w or 150w bulbs.
I'm wondering if what you have is actually the fluorescent dimmable ballast.

I wasn't aware of it either until I got this ballast, looked at it and it said dimmable on it. It has two wires that are labeled dimming. I searched the net and sure enough, its dimmable

Ok, how do I wire it though? I hooked the two wires to a pot and it didn't do anything. Would it be like a meanwell driver and also require a 10v power supply?

If you post the model number of the ballast then we may be able to locate a data sheet for it. Otherwise I couldn't tell ya if you need a 10v source or not. I'm assuming you would but can't confirm without knowing the specs nor would I suggest you try until you know for sure.

Well I can't find any specs on that ballasts other than it is more than a few years old and of corse Ice Cap went out of business in 2010. I think another investor is still manufacturing ballasts using the Ice Cap name but they're not the same company anymore. At this point I'd say try it with a 10v source and see. Or any sacrificial power supply laying around the house that's 10v d.c. or less. You need a 10k ohm pot.
Pot should have 3 legs...left, middle and right leg.
Positive wire from 10v power supply goes on the right leg. The blue wire from the ballast goes on the middle leg. The white wire from the ballast and the negative wire from the power supply both connect to the left leg on the pot. Pretty strait forward.
