I like to cut with a pair of Scissors.Leaving enough on the stalk to play with. I have never tried the neeting method. I use rubber bands (2). one on each side. With in 2 or 3 days it attatches itself to the rock.
Take the xenia out of the water. see if you can get tweezers some where you can lift it from the base. Cut the band and see if you can work the rubber band out. Then place the bottom piece with out the rubber band somewhere you would like to.

how big is the tank ? what kind of lighting ?
take the total amount of watts divide by the size of the tank.. = how many watts per gallon
I have 4 -130watt bulbs = 520 watts divided by 55gal tank = 9.45 watts per gallon

In my experience, the rubberband method is probably the worst method. The netting method has shown the best results for me. Read this thread, it has some good discussion on the matter as well as pics showing you how to do it.

That is true sweetdawn...but if you frag them you can get exponentially more growth. It is kind of like how bacteria multiply. One bacteria becomes two...but if you have two bacteria, they become four...yadda yadda :joy:
