get phosban to lower it and keep doing water changes 5 gallons per week and moniter the phosphate levels. after about 1-2 months take the phosban out and check to see if the phosphate stays down and if it does then you just need to kepp with the water changes

Water changes using the RO/DI water, phosphate remover like phosban was suggested, but also examine your food source. Many frozen food for instance will have phosphates as preservatives.

Nearly everything releases phophates. It depends on how stocked your tank is. What size and fish, inverts etc. do you have in your tank? I have a 55 that I am switching to a 150 soon but only have a small angel, 2 clowns and a black cap basslet in my tank. I have had to use tap water numerous times also. Phosphates are just a part of having a tank. You can do cheap options like pads or better stuff like granular products that you place in your filter. This should get rid of them till you start using RO water if you already are not. Also the planting of shaving brush and mangroves seems to have helped mine. My nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, phosphates etc are all undetectable by every test imaginable.

For a reef tank I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything over 0.5ppm Perhaps for a fish only tank phospate levels arent as critical exept for algae control.

In order of preference:
1 - Add less Phosphate to the tank.
1a - Don't overstock with fish.
1b - Don't overfeed.
1c - Don't feed food that dissolves in water.
1d - Use phosphate free water for topoff & water changes (RO/DI).
2 - Water changes.
3 - An algae scrubber.
4 - A chemical ion exchange (phosban).

Do you dose with Kalkwasser? I was just reading a thread that is a sticky in the Information thread that talked about adding your Kalk to the skimmer and it helps reduce phosphates. Probably not as good of a fix when they're high as if you did the water changes, but a good idea as an additional measure and to keep them in check once they're under control again.
