How to get rid of mushrooms???

Help...they have taken over my tank. They are everywhere including growing on the shells of my crabs. Does anyone know an easy way to cut down my mushroom population? I would like to eliminate about half of them to add a little variety to the tank.

If you want to take the time I'm sure you can find takers for frags and nuke what you don't want with limewater or lemon juice.

Really the mushrooms are not anything special. Pretty much the same color as purple coralline algea which I have enough of that too. The rocks they are on are too big to part with so nuking them sounds good. Doesn't bother me at all.
socal57che, can you elaborate on the limewater/lemon idea?

Removing mushrooms in 3 easy steps:
Step 1: Take the mushrooms out of your tank.
Step 2: Place removed mushrooms in a box.
Step 3: Send mushrooms to me!

if you point a powerhead right on them, they will detach themselves, then you could trade or sell them loose. I just hate to see anything killed when so many new people are looking for beginner corals.
Purple is one color shroom I dont have

Draw a couple drops of lemon juice into a syringe and inject it into the shroom near the base. It will die. You can also make a paste using Kalkwasser or pickling lime (same thing) and do the same thing. If you have access to a vetrinary syringe the tips available are large enough to accomodate the paste. Otherwise just remove the needle. Don't use too much or treat too many specimens at once. You should monitor your PH if you're treating a lot of shrooms.

I agree.
If there is a local reef club, just post that you have free shrooms and people will be lined up to help you.
If you were closer, I would.
I would like to have some more purples.

In fact, if you post in the trading section, I'm sure someone would be happy to ship (return postage paid) you an empty thermos to fill and return.

Pull a rock out and spend some time with a little chisel. One at a time and then they won't be free floating. They will have a little chunk of rock they are attached to.

Thank you for the suggestions. I agree with you all about not killing them, and they do make great beginner corals. I'm pretty sure one would have to try to kill them, hence my current situation. I wish there was more interest in my area...not a single store that sells or trades coral anymore within a 100mi radius. I will most likely go the lemon juice route, but if someone would send me a postage paid container they can have all they want! (hint, hint...)

just cover 'em up with epoxy. leave 'em for like 3 weeks and they should be gone when you take the epoxy out.
