I am adding chaeto to my sump in a fuge chamber. Does it need LR and LS to grow/thrive or can it sit by itself with just lighting and flow? Thanks

Lol, reverse lighting on the fuge and throw it in. That’s all I did and I have it all over the place for my tangs to eat fresh macro.

I'm a little confused here. I keep reading how it's a great source of nutrition for tangs...do you take it out and feed it or does it release something into the water column that they benefit from? Thanks

As it grows you need to trim it. When I trim it, I take it and clip it inside my tanks for the tangs to eat. My YT and HT go ape sh*t over it. When they see me playing around under the tank, they are like kids with their noses pressed up against a store fronts glass hoping some cheto will makes it way to the clip for them.

Yes it’s a great natural algae with fresh nutrients that tangs love. Instead of buying the algae sheets I give them a huge clipping of it. I also go to the ethnic food isle in my grocery store and by sushi wrap for 1.99 instead of spending 15 bucks for a package of sea veggies. it’s the same exact sea weed. The only difference is one is packaged up nice and neat for fish hobbyist and the other comes wrapped up to wrap fish in, hehehehehe

I know I'll get flamed for this but I have a Kole Tang in my 75 and he won't eat Nori, Lettuce or that red algae in my other thread titled "Please Identify Yourself". What gives? I can't seem to find a fresh veggie that he will eat. My chocolate chip starfish eats the Nori though. Go figure.

mine did the same thing when i 1st started putting it in the tank, it took them a week or so to get used to it and then started mowing it down!

the question is how not to grow cheato. Dump it in the sump, give it so so to average lighting and it just grows like mad. Suppose to like to tumble but mine never did or cared. I threw a powerhead in there and it still didn't tumble. I turn it over once a week so the bottom part gets light too. started out with a small bag off egay and its filled my fuge section rather quickly.

Thanks, I plan on routing one of the hoses from my overflow to dump water straight to the fuge section. Hopefully that will be enough flow to make it tumble.
This question is still out there..........
Is it necessary to add LS and LR for the chaeto to thrive? If chaeto is supposed to tumble then it doesn't need LR or LS to anchor to, right???

nope doesn't anchor to anything. it just floats in the water. I have sand (not live, hell play sand) and one peace of rock and some rubble but just for pods.
