It dose it has to be clean never used for anything els except acclimating fish and iverts. SG around 1.026 should be good for anything fish or corals I have mine set at 1.026 and it gives me alittle flux both ways some have it set as high as 1.028 and as low as 1.025

so i should basically start *slowly* adding more salt to my tank? the hydrometer i bought from the lfs says that the sg should be between 1.020 - 1.024. so i thought 1.023 was pretty good. So if i want to start reef, i need it to be at 1.026 right?
Also, my water has been a bit cloudy lately, just did a 20% water change to try and clear it up and its still cloudy...any ideas on how to clear it up? I just bought a pH balancer to bring my pH up to 8.2 (from 7.8) could this be causing the cloudiness?

I had a cleaner shrimp for over a year, in a "not so perfectly maintained" tank setup, and upon introducing two Peppermint shrimp..the vanished. I don't know if the others ganged up on him, or what, but.....all my levels were perfect too.

Dont add salt directly to the tank if there is anything alive in there. The salt can land on them and kill them or they can breath it in and it can burn the gills. Mix it up and make it alittle more potant that you would normally and do it wile doing a water change or take some of your water out of your tank and mix it up and them let it set overnight and place it back in the tank. But it will have to done outside of the tank or you could kill your stuff.
I dont think the ph would cause cloudy water. Mabey your powerhead is kicking up sand or you have a burrowing creature that is fanning the sand to make it a home. I really dont think ph would make it cloudy but I could be wrong.

"whoah...that bucket has to be totally clean without soap I thought?"
To Gonefishn - If you could read, that is what I wrote! I said to use one that was totally clean that has NOT BEEN cleaned with soap or used for anything else. I guess I have to write in plain english and say, just go buy a brand new bucket!

My tank is small (24 gal) and I do have a diamond goby that likes to burrow and sift through my sand. So am i doomed to a life of cloudy water as long as i have him? he is absolutey the favorite of my tank...besides the abalone...

He may quite and he may not some ppl have to resort to getting read of there fish but once he gets his hole the way he wants he should quite. Or get a goby shrimp "a pistol shrimp" they will help with the hole and they wont stir it to make it bigger.

My goby just likes to make mounds and valleys of sand randomly throughout the tank. Somedays it will take piles from the day before and level it again.
I did a water change yesterday and i always worry about stressing out the fish, so i pay extra attention to the for te next couple of days. I woke up this morning and couldnt find the diamond goby. i was so worried all morning. at noon i finally had to know where it was so i dismantled my lr and sifted through all my sand. It was NOT in the tank!!!! what could have happened? I was so upset i made my parents come over and help me look (not like he could have gone far). I have read that they are jumpers so i worried about it getting out and dying on my floor. we eventually found him in the filter system of my nano cube! any ideas as to why he would jump into the filters?

IMO, it is just a young tank combines perhaps with poor acclimation. I would give is some more time just to mature and then try again, with a longer acclimation :)

yes, i totaly agree, try to do alonger than normal acclimation JUST to make sure its not ur acclimation that killing it:yes:

Ever seen "Finding Nemo?" Maybe your fish was trying to sabotage the filter system for his great escape plan.

P.S. Also, I have a cleaner shrimp. I didn't do the drip acclimation, but I did do the thing where I added a quarter cup of water every ten minutes until the bad was full, dump out half the water, do it again, then add him to the tank. He's been doing great. He cleans all my fish except the Scooter Blenny, plus he eats the Seaweed Salad I put in the tank, and he scampers around and gets the fish food that falls on the bottom of the tank. He'll go all over your hand if you put it in the tank. I'm actually considering getting another one because I like him so much. I have to read up and see if two will live together. I didn't know about the drip method until after I got him, by the way.
