How to make the switch

I've had my tank up and running for just over a year now. At first, I only wanted FOWLR, but now I'm feeling very confident with my ability to keep my water stable, and I want to start a reef. My problem is that I have a CC star that has grown to a pretty good size. He was teeny when I got him. I live in a really small town and there are no LFS around here. I don't want to get corals just so the star will eat them, and I don't wanna flush him, so is there any way to get rid of him without straight up killing him myself, or should I wait until he dies of natural causes?

well if you have the means to, you can set up a seperate tank for him and when its all cycled and your ready to move to corals you can switch him to another tank. Or you can bag him up and take him back to the store you got him from, unless you got him online.
Or you can post an add on craigslist and see if anybody local would give him a good home.
