OK, I searched for some time and could not find the formula, I know I have seen it on here before, but how do you determine the size of a tank? I am planning to build a custom tank, 8' long, by 3' deep, by 3' high.. anybody know what gallon this would be?

539 gallons???
go to garf.org and click the calculators link on the left side of the page
then click on the tank water volume calculator, underneath calculators
that will help you out

JMO, But I wouldn't go that high. Tough to light and tough to work on. Let alone the structure of the glass or acrylic needed for that 36" height!

how high would you recommend?
we pan to run all sumps and plumbing to an adjacent walk in closet for maintenance, and have at least a foot of space on each side to allow for fixes, and movement. We will run probably my current 65 gallon as a sump, and a 15 g and 20 gallon QT.

just go really long lol
I know my 65, I can barely reach the bottom of it when standing on a chair, but yes, I think it is 24" I have a canopy on it too

Anything over 24" with that length you'll run into structural issues as well as being a large pain in the butt to work on. I was just messing with a 120 tall thats 30" and although I really like the look b/c of the height I had a really hard time reaching the bottom. I'm 6' tall and what a drag. Like Jake said go Long.
At 24" tall you're still looking at 359 gals of water, somehow I think coming from a 65 you'll make due!
