I used a paint called Fusion.
It worked really well, but I went through 3 cans. It's designed to stick better than conventional spray paint. I also used a blue masking tape, it didn't leave any residue.

I used flat black enamel rolled it. Sorry not much help. I did see a tank that had been painted in 2 shades of blue but it didn't fade it was sponged or textured over the other color kind of like a white wash look. Sorry it had come in used I never talked to the owner. It did look very good kind of a rippled (sp) look. Hope it helps some

I used the cheapest can of blue spray paint i could find and sprayed it. I applied several coats with one can and it looks great. Everything looks the same with no darke spots. it will look awful from the back when you do it but it will look fine from the front when its all done.

Just make sure you seal the top good before painting with newspaper and tape to keep overspray out of the inside of your tank.

Do a search for sign vinyl. It is a vinyl film that has adhesive on one side. Should be able to find a roll for less than $20.

I have painted both glass and acrylic tanks, and both were easier than I thought. I used plain old cheap black spray on the glass, and just misted it with 11-12 thin layers until it was covered. I used the Krylon Fusion on the acrylic tank, and it was a piece of cake - about 4 coats and it was done. You'll be much happier than you would hve been using a background.
