Just use a razor or knife and cut away what you want to remove. Check with your LFS or any local reefers and you may beable to sell or trade.

When I still had mine, I would just peel it off the rocks. Cutting will promote more growth. you can also place small rocks above it and it will travel to them. I found it always grows up toward the top.

Just pull the stalks out by hand, or cut it. Either way, most likely you are not totally removing it, but it will take time for it come back. As mentioned, try to sell what you take out, there are buyers out there. A lot of people can't seem to keep it, but others of us can't seem to stop it. If you are going to frag it to sell, just move a frag rock up beside of a stalk and it should move over to it within a few days.

by pulling them off the rock would that damage them?

it would damage them, but just short term. xenia is one of the most durable of corals i've come in contact with.
i cut mine off of places i don't want it with scissors, and catch the stalk floating around, and place it in a low flow area, on a pile of rocks or sand, which it will attach to in no time at all. i feel bad tossing it in the garbage.
the stump left over will need to be destroyed, or it will grow back shortly. you can use kalkwasser just like you use for aptasia.

Last year I traded three small frags of xenia for a fish worth about 20$. The next day I happened bo be back in the same lfs,and there were my xenia (which were a weed in my tank) all alone in a display tank with a sign that said "RARE BLUE PULSING XENIA $99.00/frag".

That's crazy! In response to Big, however, I actually love that my Xenia overgrows. It takes two seconds to swipe it off the glass or pull it from the rocks. My lfs gives me 50% of it's worth, so it's like free corals for me! I usually go every 3 months or so and get about $30-50 credit. Another tip if you're having difficulty getting the frags to attach...I take a stainless steel pin and puncture the frag and pin it to a porous part of the rock. After two or so days, the frag usually attaches and then I remove the pin.

They are a fairly invasive coral. Once they are in your tank, they are difficult to get out, and they smell. I have it in mine, I'm hoping for a back wall of xenia. The joke here is that xenia, (and kenya trees) are the gonorrhea of fishtanks.

It's possible that my lfs is more likely to take my frags because I'm usually trading in colonies not single frags. I will attach 3-5 frags per rock...easy to do and considered larger specimens and more valuable for selling purposes.

I've called up a few, they said no to kenya trees or xenia. Wouldn't even look.

Thats funny! I hear ya on Kenya trees, wish I wouldn't have put that weed in my tank! But I like the xenia.
If you have the Xenia in a low flow area, will it not spread as much? My colony is being blasted by a powerhead to get it to walk, but it seems to be slower to move in less flow.

it will spread in any flow. it always grows up towards the light. then when it reaches the top, it spreads outward. see the tops of my overflows?
