how to resize pics for avatar?

yeah good question, I have photoshop & fireworks, and it is darn tough to get the picture to 10000bytes, it keeps saying to large, but I have my image 20X18... rofl am I doing something wrong? I am not the best with these programs... I am saving the files as a jpg.

well at the top of your bar were it ask you what you want to get into see if there is something that eather says strech/schew or crop or something long those lines go in there and say you want to make it like 50% smaller both ways then resave it and then try or if you can find something that tells you how meny picels are in hte picture and see if you can size it down from there.. otherwise teh best advice i could give you is go to your local computer store and ask them for sure
