How to seal ******** of a wooden tank canopy?

I made a ply wood canopy and stand a few years ago for my 29 gallon. Although the wood is holding up fine, the ******** metal brackets are rusting even though they were coated with polyurethane along with everything else. What's the current "in" product to seal the ******** from exposure to salt water and be as maintenance free as possible?
Thanks

I use gloss paint. On the inside of canopies, I use gloss white. If I feel like it needs another layer of protection, I coat that with polyurethane. I prefer to use rustoliem brand paint.

I like to use a base coat of killz to help prevent mold and mildew before coating over with one or two coats of gloss white. I would add poly to that if I thought there was going to be an excess of water splashing, but really 3 coats of paint should be sufficient for most purposes.

On the ******** of my canopy I used a few coats of high gloss white paint and 2 or 3 coats of quick drying poly... worked great for me
