How to set up super skimmer?

Just got my coralife super skimmer and im trying to set it up right now, have most of it done except the intake is the part im having trouble with. I have the flexible tube in the right spot but its supposed to fit into the box that attatches it to the tank that has the sponge in it, but the hole in the sponge is WAY bigger than the tube. Is this how it goes together or am i doing something wrong? How do i connect the two pieces?

The hole in the sponge is supposed to be bigger, that's okay. But you'll want to cut the tube off at the bottom so there's at least an inch of clearance between its bottom and the sponge at the bottom of the box.

but how does the tube connect to the sponge?

if we're talking about the bubble production diffuser, mine isn't connected to it. the water just flows out of the tube and into the box. the tube is just connected to the skimmer and the box hangs off the side of the tank or sump.
