How to start a fuge?

I'm thinking about starting a SMALL refugium and wondered what I need to get it started?
I have a 55 gallon reef with 2 actinics and 1-250w MH (it's a column so I only need one).
Do I need a special light (what if I do it as a hang on fuge?).
what plants do I need to get it started?

Also, a question.
I'm looking at the Ecosystem Pro HOB refuge. It's a full kit but one version (which is more expensive) has a skimmer. Do i really need the one with the skimmer if I have a skimmer in my sump?

you dont really need the skimmer if you already have one, but it wont hurt anything to have it. does the HOB fuge come with a light? i have just standard flourescent tubes on my fuge, with live sand, a little live rock, and a clump of the macro algae cheato. some people have really powerful lights on their fuges, but it isnt necessary.

I just ordered the cpr refugium, has everything, light, skimmer, pump found it for $269.95. Dr's site had them for 289.99 and that was without light. Research you will find it. If not let me know back here and I will e-mail you where I ordered mine. Also this was shipping included. Dr.s site not included.
I just typed in CPR Refugium, then started comparing prices.

Yeah, what was cool was the kit comes with everything. Its 18" long (which is all I can have on my tank for a HOB) and it comes with a 13W PC light. It's completely ready to go when you get it.

The one I sent for is 24 inch long, 4.5 gal for the 269.95 shipping included. Is this the same outfit?

For the same price you could have bought the one that comes with a 150 gallonrated sump/refugium with skimmer, lights and everything. It is a 29 gallon tank. I got mine on

I don't have room for that, mine had to be a HOB. I would of loved to had one under the tank, but my 55 sits on a low coffee table. So the only way I could have one that wouldn't be in the way, is a hang on back. So if I ever have to break this tank down for some unforseen problem, I will put it on a higher cabinet so that I could do something bigger and out of site. Thanks for the info tho.
So for now I hope this works and helps with filtration and pod growth. Plus I have a in tank skimmer now that does a good job. I think, so it will be nice to have it out of the tank. :joy:
The only thing I don't like about the CPR skimmers are they are noisey.

The one I got is theEcoSystem 40 Hang-On-Back Refugium for $259.95. The reason I got it was because it came with everything (pump and light). Yours looks better than mine but, I liked the idea of not having to worry about ANY plumbing.
However, does yours sound easy to setup? If so, I may cancel my order and get that one.

civileng68: The one I ordered comes with everything, pump, light, skimmer, ready to just hang on back, no plumbing, hang on and plug in. That price was with shipping included.
misHeatLur: Do you have the CPR refuge, with the skimmer? I have two HOB CPR backpak skimmers, one double and one single and they are so noisey. My LFS swears buy this brand, said he uses them and they work. So I ordered that brand, but I am not sure about how noisey they are. Maybe there is something I am missing and can do about it? Any ideas's?
