How to stop spill over?

If the return pump of a sump burns up what stops the Overflow? Does it just keep pumping water? Would a controller help eliminate this problem?
Thanks-

Most people have it set up where there is only 1 pump which is the return in the sump. The water overflowing is caused by water being pumped back into the main tank. Therefore if the pump stops (burns up, lights go out whatever) a little more will flow back down to the sump, then it just stops.
Does that make sense?
Its like taking a pitcher of water and puring into a bowl, once it starts flowing over if you stop pouring it stops flowing over.

don't forget the syphone break in the return line as the overflow will stop delivering water to the sump as soon as the sump return pump stops. but the return line will then syphon water back to the sump until the syphon is broken. Best thing to have is a small hole drilled just below where your water line in the main tank is. Then when the pump stops and the water starts to back syphon into the sump it will stop once air hits this hole.

LOL, if you don't have a syphon break calculate how far down to put your pipe in gallons that will be siphoned out. Figure out cubic inches available in your sump and then make your inlet pipe go in only deep enough so that it will stop siphoning before the sump overflows.
Length times width times height (In Inches Only) divided by 231 is gallons. If that helps you, but cubic inches is just as good
