how to work my overflow

Hello I just got a new overflow hang-on it is the kind with a u-tube how do you get it to suction water through the u-tube to the back part where the water returns to the sump I can not figure it out. I am wondering if something was left out in the box it came in I can not figure it out.
I would appreciate any help you could give me

You will need to feed an airline hose into the u tube and suck the air out to start the siphon.
Make sure the airline is at the top inside of the u tube to insure all the air is sucked out.
Everything should be peachy after that.

One more thing.
Water in the front and back part of the overflow will help greatly.

Thanks so much for responding . after reading this I tried to do this It seemed to start the siphon but would not stay siphoned where exactly in the u-tube should I have the end of the airline hose at? there is two ends to a u-tube do you mean in the middle of the u-tube or at the other end of u-tube.

place the end of the tube in the highest place in the middle of the u-tube to remove as much of the air as you can.
