Can you believe it!! If it can go wrong...
Salmonella IN HIS FRIGGIN BLOODSTREAM of all places.
I think it's some sort of cry for attention, but hey that's me (kidding).
He has a fever for a week, and real bad headaches. Urgent care doc suspects (after Flu culture is negative) menengitis and sends him to ER. ER REALLY wants to believe it's viral. They must have asked 50 times for symptoms of a cold. So, they send him home. We got home at 9am (12 hours in ER) he sleeps and when he wakes, his temp is 105.1.
Sees referred doc, doc looks at bloodwork. Admits him to the hospital.
2 days of IV antibiotics, still 102.5 fever.
Now here's my question Oscardeuce or Al Mc or anyebody who'd know...
Can you think of any reason why his white blood cell count would be so low, with such an infection??
If it matters...
He was anemic, low platelet count and potassium was very low...
But I just wanna know about the white blood cell thing. It was the deciding factor to send him home with no antibiotics the first time we went to the ER...

Have they checked for hepititis?

Bionic... I think so, but I'm only basing that on the 50 vials of blood, urine and even stool samples they tested. He shows no signs of jaundice and they keep pushing their fingers into his liver and he says it's not painful, so if any of that says they tested for hep, then...
They are expecting to see kidney failure first in the order of organ failure.
He most likely got it froma restaraunt in Maryland.
Thanks for the well wishes all!

In infections that your body has been fighting for awhile. The white blood cell supply gets exhausted since you are using them faster than the body can make them and they start to drop.
Sending lots of healing vibes to your hubby. I hope he gets better soon

Thanks Bender
And thanks Bionic! I'm getting all kinds of questions answered there, ie, the low platelet count.
Guess the fact that he's had Crohn's since he was 7 really does play a part in all this...
As I said, if it can go wrong...

Day three today. around 1 he gets another IV bag of antibiotics but as it stands, he still has a fever. IV sight leaked out all over the place. Guess that's thanks to the platelet count...
He's a basket case, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

Hope he gets better soon Tizz ... Sepsis is no minor thing.

Yeah, I keep reading that... I guess the reality of it has not hit home yet. I just expect that everything will be fine and dandy...
I don't even think I know how to think otherwise...

Oh honey! I'm saying a prayer for him and your family right now. If there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to ask.

For the menengitis?? Not they didn't have to... Can't remember why though. They learned from all his other tests to rule it out.
What they did, that I know of, the first night was chest x-rays, Head CT, blood culture, urine test... I think that's it.
And thanks for the offer, but I don't need anything.
I got my folks outa here, so that helps. I'm not trying to entertain them while tending to the hubby.
Starting work tomorrow was a bad idea, but who knew right??
Oh well, this thread will be my diary and I'll look back on it in a year, lol

Tizz ... I hope I didn't come off as all gloom and doom. As long as he is in good hands I'm sure he'll be fine. Hang in there Tizz.

Oh no, not at all! I was just pointing out how pink my glasses are, lol.
It's a curse. I'm not sure I even know how to take them off.

Tiz....Hope all is going better and I will keep positive thoughts for a good outcome.
The Mayo Clinic reference pretty much gives you some of the many reasons for the possible low blood count. From your description of symptoms and the culture results you've got to go with the low wbc coming from faster use to fight infection than his body is producing.
is he on chronic meds for the Chron's disease. Some people take some pretty
potent immunospressive drugs with that problem and the drugs can cause the low wbc and platelet count.
I do not want to second guess anyone..was he tested for lyme disease?

oh jeeze girl. I just got home from there. Sounds like they are running everything they need. Rose colored glasses are okay, don't worry about. Reality is small doses is not bad. Hopefully your parents can stay busy with the kido's. wondering how on earth one can get this from a resturant and it sounds like something their health dept would want to know about.
I will be praying for you my friend!! New job?? yikes, I hope that works out.

Hey AlMc, whaddya do, search your name?? You always answer when I call, lol.
They didn't test for lyme. His blood culture was + for the salmonella though...
No meds for the crohn's. He's in total denial. Wouldn't even have it looked at til to today.
I looked at his met panel and best I could tell is... his electrolytes are outa balance due to low potassium. His wbc and rbc counts are both low...
Some other stuff but nothing the docs pointed out.
Love, I will call the cdc in MD tomorrow. No, it's not a "new" job, it's my old job that I quit for summer. I go back tomorrow...
And my folks left friday. This past week they were here while the hubby was all laid up in bed, but now they are gone and he's in the hospital.
I just got back, and there is an ever so slight hint of pink in his cheeks and his forehead, unlike the usual green this week... His fever was down at last check, and his crohn's tests all came back fine... inflamation but fine.
