Why not just get a frag or two and grow it out, it'll be that big in about 2 or 3 years(maybe a little longer, but not much), if it likes it in your tank. I really love my caps too. Is there any different(other than white)coloration to the rim. If not, I'd say $150 give or take, just because of size. That is probably a low bid, just thought I could kick off bidding.

Probably a couple hundred, cheap. I would do just a frag though if you have never had sps, just to make sure it will do okay in your tank. Otherwise you will be wasting your money and killing a beautiful coral.

Just the white coloration around the rim. The bottom layer of this thing is about the circumfrance of a basketball.

Wow, that is pretty big. Pic Doesn't do it justice then. I still wouldn't go to much over 250. The things grow like mad when they are happy. I have one, it turned brown in color when I put in my tank(it was a very light green one), but the thing, I swear would be that big if I had not broken it a bunch of times, it was maybe a 5X5" piece with a couple of plates, now it grows in a couple of areas in my tank, fragged some, threw some out. I guess I just really like watching them grow, so I normally just go for a frag or something small, plus limited space for big pieces. Good luck if you buy it

Just out of curiousity, how do you keep those from getting out of control? Do you have to snap the plates and keep them trimmed? How delicate are they? I really want one but my tank isn't ready yet.

I just break the pieces off with my fingers when they need cut back, then either let it lay on the bottom to grow or get covered with sand, trade some, or just pitch it(depends which one, I never throw out my orange or green w/purple rim). Capricornis Montipora are probably the hardiest of SPS, definitely not as difficult as Acropora. Digitata and encrusting monti's do pretty well also, don't grow as fast as the Caps though.
I guess the real question is What is this worth to you, whether it is common or not?

They grow all over, kind of circle like, as you can see. Wider, taller, bigger, thicker when they are happy.
300 is fair, if you like it that much, I still would try and get a nice frag and watch it grow, but I'm sure the guy wants to off the whole thing for the cash.

That's kind of what I was thinking in my original post, you(hobbiest) are not going to get store prices for pieces, especially if it is not rare or something.

Well, I guess if you really like it, and you think the price is fair, then buy it. Do you have any other SPS types,type of lighting(I forget),and how much water movement in the tank? I would hate to see you spend that much and watch it die in a short time. SPS like lots of flow, good lighting(normally MH), and excellent water quality(very stable parameters too), if you can meet it's requirements, then I'd say it should do well in your system and go for it. Good luck with it, I know your going to buy it.

Just getting into the sps thing. I have a few small sps that are doing great. (green Bali slimer which I love) Have a lot of lps zoas etc. 300 watts HQI 192 watts actinic. about a 12X turnover and 2 Koralia 3's.
Just don't really think I want to take up that much space for one coral. Maybe I'm just dreaming
