Thanks everyone, as of now, he is still alive, though there is not much left of him. All levels are ideal, expect SG, which I'm slowly bringing up. I'm now using a hydrometer, up untill last wednesday I used a swinging arm one (I know, everyone here hates those, but at least I got a reading, I keep getting bubbles with the hydrometer, I took the water the lfs to test sg).
ophiura, I have him in a cup in the main tank. So you think the lower levels of sg is what got to him? All other levels were ideal when I tested the day after I found him. I've tested the levels each week since then and they haven't changed.
I saw no reason for a hospital tank since I have no fish...I didn't think anything could get sick, esp since we haven't added fish to the tank in well over two years (I think even longer, I lost my two fish last May and I didn't have the heart to get more). So I don't have one set up, I do have a 20g laying around, but I'm not sure what good it would do to set it up at this point.
My husband brought up popping him, but I couldn't do it. I just can't kill the creature with others saying he still has a chance. My husband was going to kill it when I posted this thread, but then the star wiggled out of his hand twice, so Sinner said he the star 'had too much wiggle in him to be dead.'
If I need to get a refractometer I will, I didn't know about those. I don't think the lfs has any, I was lucky they had the hydrometer (lfs is more of a pet store...carries some saltwater fish stuff, sometimes, they have swf...but not much)
Starfish can regenerate unless it's diseased,
If it's diseased I don't know how or from what. Like I said, I've had the star (both of them) since dec 2001.
Thanks everyone, I leave him if he has a chance...times like this make we want to give up all together...

Just leave it be and work on that specific gravity. It isn't a sure thing, but seems like it isn't ready to give up yet  Don't worry about a hospital tank. Actually for seastars it is a bad idae because you would have to slowly acclimate them to yet another specific gravity. So best just to stay where it is. Don't try and move it or whatever. We'll keep our fingers crossed

I know it sounds hokey, but I will pray for you, and if it doesn't make it I wil pray for your peace. And while I am at It, I will pray for me too.
