I am starting my cycle on my 55g while at the lfs i was geting the fish "damsels" to cycle it and told the guy I wanted to put a Humu Humu trigger in it. The guy said well you could just put the trigger in it now to cycle it and its about the same price as 5 damsels. but he was not sure if it would live .so what do you think would the one trigger be ok to cycle the tank in place of the damsels I dont want to just kill a fish so help me out
Thanks :help: :help: :help:

I would'nt for 2 reasons,
You can cycle a tank with a raw shrimp and not expose fish to the stess of cycling.
I would not introduce the Huma Huma as the first fish, if it establishes the tank as it's territory, it could be hard to introduce other fish later. You should always add your fish, least aggressive first to the most aggressive last.

Ok as for cycling my tank with a raw shrimp Ive never done it that way hows it work??
and I want this to be a fish only tank and due to the triggers size and what it eats I only want two or three fish what would be a good fish to add with this trigger ideas would be nice
Thanks

Go to the supermarket get 2 fresh shrimp and drop them in the tank. Keep testing your water untill your cycle is done. I help a friend do his 75 recently and he had to replace his shrimp because they rotted away before the tank finished cycling. Your a bit limited with tankmates in a 55, as most aggresive fish get quite large.

just letting you know a 55 is waaay to small for a humu humu trigger by almost 50 gallons!

a 55 is a little small for a trigger to be happy. you shouldn't add the trigger first.(my first mistake) He has eaten 4 fish that I've introduced to the tank after him. A trigger really reduces the type of fish that you could put in a tank(example:lionfish). They are really messy eaters. my eats everything. and I do mean everything.

ok sorry for all the ??? but I find its better to ask the guys who keep the fish you want than someone who will tell you what ever to make that sale.
So if 55g is to small for the Humu Humu trigger is there another kinda i could get and stay in the trigger family??? or sould I look into another type of fish?? and if so what would be somthing that I need to look at??
I rather have a happy fish than a dead one so till i get this figured out Ill try cycling my tank with the shrimp
Thanks for all the reply

id say you need to avoid the trigger family because triggers do better in tanks 100 gallons and more since they get VERY large and need ALOT of swimming room! but what you should look at really depends on what you want to do.. id say dwarf lions and dwarf angels and some smaller eels and even the smaller puffers such as valentini are good places to start looking!

ok but when looking at puffers remember there are very few small ones and you can only get the ones that get around 5-6 inches in a 55g tank i know of a site that you can look at all of the fish and price them.. but i cant post the link here so if you want it feel free to email me at ams153@yahoo.com!
