Hydor Koralias??

I have a 40 gal tank that I want to purchase Koralias for and am having a tough time deciding which sizes to purchase. The tank is 36"L x 17"T (2 the top of the sand bed). I have a "CPR" back pack that has a "Acella" PH @ 266 gph, and am wanting to ad a refugium w/ an overflow (not sure how much flo yet). I've been thinking 2 - # 1's & 2 - nanos, any thoughts????

I have 2 of the number ones and they are pretty crappy, they barely push anything out. I would get 2x 3's and put them on each side of the tank and that would be all you need.

I got the number 4 and it took me weeks to figure out just the right spot for it. Unless you doing alot of hard corals I would recomend nothing larger then the 3. I tried the 2 and it was way to low of a flow.

On what size tank did you have that koralia # 2 on that you said was not enough flow. Just bought a 38 gal and was about to purchase a koralia#2 but after reading your reply thinking about the three just dont want to blow all the sand around and such. thank you any other replys welcome.

I have 3 #2 and a nano in my 55 gal tank, and a canister filter and the return from my sump to provide circulation and it seems about right . I have done a lot of moving around on the 2's and have them placed higher up in the tank so that they don't blow the sand around and I use the nano to help in a low flow area on the sand bed. I also have moved my corals around some to find the spot that seems to best, or at least acceptable, for each one. It can take awhile to find that sweet spot where you balance flow between enough and too much so it may still take you a little bit of time to get your flow dialed in. I would suggest getting a couple of #2's and a couple of nanos and you should be OK.

Thanks Nordy, I was actually thinking about putting the two stronger pumps in the back and using the nanos as you have, to help keep algea off the sand. Are you happy with the nano's in that type of an application? Many thanks for the advice. Tracy

Koralia #3's would turn that tank into a whirlpool. I have 3's on my 110g (48" long) and I wouldn't want more; as it is I have a hard time keeping sand down.
For a 40g tank that's only 3 feet long, I would probably do 2 K-1's if you have other flow devices in the tank, or two K-2's for a good strong flow. Seriously, if you put two 3's in that tank your fish are gonna wear themselves out trying to stay in one place.

I have 2 k 4's and 2 k 1's in my 75g tank which is also 48inches long. I don't see what the problem would be with 2 3's in a 3 foot long, it is a waste of money to go buy 5 different koralias especially with the prices i've seen. don't point them down to the sand and you won't have a sand storm?

I have a 58gallon tank, which is the same foot print as you tank and I have 2 hydor 1's (they each have 400gph) and a seaclone 100 and emperor 400. It seems to work just fine (although I am having algae issues on my sand and probably need a nano down there to keep that down) I second what nova said. 3's seem like a bit much, any slow swimmers might have a hard time with it.

This is all great advice... I think that with my 40g-36" long tank, I'm gonna go with 2-#2's one for each back corner and maybe start with 1-nano in the front to help with algae on the sand. How's that sound???? Don't forget that I have my HOB skimmer running and plan to put an overflow to a refugium as well. Those will both ad flow to my tank. Thanks for all the advice

it's not too much, its the same as getting the 2's and the ones. instead of having 5 powerheads in your tank you will only have 2. I have the 2 4's half way down on each side and it keeps my sand clean and does the job. 2 3's is not too much, it will be all you need instead of getting the others.most fish like swimming in the current so i dont see why that is a problem.

I think that sounds great! They say you should have a flow rate somewhere between 20x - 50x the gallons in your tank, so that sounds like plenty. You just dont want any dead spots so placement is key.

I dont have 5 power heads silly, I have 2 just like you (only mine are 1's) and a filter and protien skimmer. Your tank is prolly bigger than mine though
