Hey all,
So, I think I might have found an awesome glass cleaner. I used to use an ammonia based glass cleaner like windex and sprayed it on a paper towel before I wiped my glass down. It did ok, but it always left streaks. And then I would have to sit and use two, three, sometimes four paper towels with ammonia on it to really get all of the streaks out that was left by the salt.
Then I switched to vinegar, and it didn't make salt streaks as bad as what an ammonia based glass cleaner did - but I would still have to sit and polish. I hate taking the time to clean the glass. I don't do it very often because it takes so long to do it and get the job done right.
So, while I was cleaning my kitchen cleaning, I use vinegar in a spray bottle to clean the surfaces of my kitchen, and then I used to spray it on a towel and use it for the aquarium. Well, I talked to a buddy of mine that does "body cleanups" Where he goes into a house that a person who has died and been there a while - and he cleans everything up. He told me that something he uses is hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle to see how clean he got the house. If he sprays a surface and there is any bubbling - then he missed a spot of bacteria. SO...
I got the idea that to inspect the cleanliness of my kitchen, I would use a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide. After cleaning, I sprayed around and then I saw some bubbling in little cracks and could hear the sizzling. Gross. So, I'm adding this to my kitchen cleanup routine for sure. lol (yeah, a little OCD.)
And then I forgot that I had put H2O2 in the bottle and put some on a paper towel and started to clean the aquarium glass. It acted kind of like vinegar at first and I wiped off as much as I could with the first paper towel and then took another dry paper towel and clean it off - and magically, it was completely clean WITHOUT ANY STREAKS! It took just two paper towels and less than 30 seconds. WOW.
When it cleaned up so well... I thought... this isn't vinegar or ammonia... it's HYDROGEN PEROXIDE! and I freaked out for a second... (with joy at a new discovery). So then, to be sure it was safe around my aquarium, I intentionally sprayed one spray into my tank (20g with 20gL sump.) and what happened? Nothing. Absolutely no harm to anything in my tank. I knew that it wouldn't... from researching it. But I just wanted to experiment for myself.
So! The next time you clean your glass, use hydrogen peroxide and come back to this thread and tell us your results.
