I totally agree with Marka, get a refractometer...it'll be the best investment you'll make for the health of your tank. I also started out with a hydrometer (swing arm) and I swore up and down that my readings were 1.025-1.026. When I received my refractometer for Christmas one year, I took a reading and my tank was at 1.030
Besides, it's a great toy and sure makes setting up water for changes a WHOLE lot easier!! RO, yeah, you can get that at Wal Mart. It's water that's been specially filtered to get rid of most, if not all contaminants that could compromise your tank/critters.
