you can find a refractometer for 40 dollars, a wouldn't at all cost use a hydrometer I have had very bad luck with them. Maybe someone else can answer that question. But in my opinion save a few more bucks it shouldn't be that much of a price difference between the 2. Just my .02
If you can get your hands on a glass float hydrometer for cheap ,they are pretty accurate. The only thing about them is they are calibrated @77 deg ,so it the water temp isnt 77 deg. you will have to use a temp chart to compensate.

Yes they are very accurate...but a refractometer with ATC is soooo much easier to use. Bay. They are cheap, I got mine for 30 bucks and when compared to 2 others, the readings are almost identical. When I compared it to my floating hydro using a compensation chart, it was more or less the same. I would wait and get the refractometer though.

Where did you guys get a refractometer for that cheap?
They are typically around $40 if you look around on some of the bigger online retailers.I think SWF use to sell them but i dont know how much they where selling for.Google "Aquarium Refractometer" the first listing has one for $39.99
I tried to save $$ and bought a swing arm hydrometer about 6 weeks ago when i started. Now I'm waiting for the refractometer i ordered a few days ago to arrive. Take it from everyone here, buy the refractometer in the beginning. The way i look at it, my $40 refractometer ended up costing me $50 since i spent $10 in the beginning on that stupid swing arm....

I threw the word "Bay" in there randomly, I thought that you might catch it lol.
i got mine on the bay for like 28 bucks cause i combined shipping with a family member . when we both made the change. I was shocked after using my trusted deep six that it read 1.021 when the one i bought for my wifes brackish tank read 1.026 on the same water and then my refractometer read 1.025 it's crazy. Also i only got the other hydrometer because the deep six didnt go to 1.008 for brackish. Thats when i knew i needed a refractometer
