One of my friends is the saltwater person at my local ***** and he has told me not to EVER buy fish from there because their policy is to keep their specific gravity at 1.016
in order to cut down on disease. they also do not allow for hospital tanks and they want any sick fish to be treated in the tank it got sick in which is bad becasue ALL of the saltwater tanks are connected to the same sump and the same water runs though every tank before getting to the sump. And they have this nasty habit of topping off with TAP water when the manager does not want to put forth the cash to pay for more salt mix.
blah
I check water that any lfs bags the fish in just to see what they run it at, and have always found ***** water dead on the 1.023 mark......I have also seen the girl that works at out local ***** get RODI water and add, as well as mixing up new salt water.........
9 out of 10 lfs anymore have a common sump/filter system, as its much more economical overall...It seems to be the standard. The main SW shop here has two filter/sump/fuge setups and each one handles about 1/2 of the tanks the shop has.......If I could do it feasibly, I myself would have all my FW on one filteration unit and my SW stuff all on one unit as well.......The ***** here are very good at isolating sick fish or tanks........All Petcos are not created equal, same for Wally Worlds........I tend to think its a local management thing (applies to all busines) when things are not what they should be........Some could care less others do what it takes....

I think judging every ***** based on just a few of them is somewhat unfair. However I also think that ***** is grossly overpriced. Then again, so are a lot of places. For instance... there is a petstore called the Aquatic Critter about one hour from where I live (actually has an ad in Coral magazine). They have an AMAZING setup with awsome specimens... but the pricetags are ridiculous. They charge easily twice as much as my lfs on everything.
On the other hand, my lfs's rarely have any rare or breathtaking critters. The tanks are always mundane in appearance. But the prices are usually great. I think every petstore has its ups and downs, but bashing a whole chain on just one or two stores' performance is folly.

No offense guys but these threads are all too common, and all too old. Just take a look at the "similar threads" below, or do a search.
Its not always a great place to shop. Use your judgement and spend your money wisely...but in the end, the money is often spent at ***** when these threads come up, so what message does it send?
I can find lots of local LFS who could easily put a sign on their tanks saying "we don't give a darn, cantcha tell?" Many of the criticisms can be applied to many stores, just that ***** is an easy target. And I can also tell you that I worked at a store where we constantly did rounds, and there were still commonly dead fish...it does not necessarily, IMO, actually reflect poorly on the overall care. It is the nature of the business that many of these fish will die in a dealer tank. Just stupid to put such a sign up.
Send the picture to *****. They've been up front enough to supply you with something to complain about. A lot of stores wouldn't even bother to make such a claim. It doesn't do any good here I am afraid.
As I've said before I really do not care for "bash" this store threads, regardless of how much they may deserve it. And they don't necessarily all deserve it as a few folks have pointed out.

was it still breathing though cause if so they're not allowed to take it out of the tank until it's completely dead. on the other hand they shouldn't even have powder blue tangs anyways. too fragile.

ALL *****'s are owned by corporate located in San Diego. THey are not a franchised operation with local ownership. Less than 10% of gross profits are generated from live animals. it is just a draw to get folks in the store so they will buy dry goods, supplies, etc. Certainly not all Petcos are bad......but the good ones appear to be the exception.
Given that ALL Petcos are owned by coporate.........by supporting one you support them all...even the bad ones.
If you do not like the chain simply speak with your wallet and take your money elsewhere. They really do not care if you spend a dime on livestock as this is not a money maker for their operation......but they do care if you cease to speend money on supplies, food, etc.

I have two Petcos within 10 miles of my house and while one keeps their SW fish in great condition the one that's actually closer to me is a death trap. I saw Yellow Tangs covered in Black ich strugling to survive, next to a rotting Coral Beauty. I only go there to get my Dog's food, because I have a Big Al's Aquarium store just 5 minutes away

As has been stated, not all Petcos are equal. Mine has two specialists for each department and some very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful people. Not every one of them is a gem but there are some that go way over and above the call of duty. Harial, that may be YOUR *****'s policy but it is NOT corp. policy or the policy of all Petcos. Their maintenance sheets state that saltwater should be tested three times weekly with results recorded, salt is to be kept at 1.021 - 1.023 (or therebouts if I remember correctly), the water that comes out of their faucets is filtered at the main line so it is NOT plain tap water, top offs with unsalinated water are perfectly acceptable if the salinity is good or too high in the tanks, and corps policy, as per their own written Policy and Procedure, is that fish are to be treated OUTSIDE the main tanks if at all possible and if not possible they need special permission from their Regional Animal Care Specialist. Deviation from any of this is grounds for possible termination.
To paraphrase, all evil needs to flourish is for good people to do nothing. So for everyone here raising a stink, what have you done about it? Anything? Or does it just make you feel good to tear something or someone else down without doing a thing to change it? With the exact same time you spent griping here you could've sent the same words via internet directly through their website where someone may be able to do something about it.
Forgive me for coming on so strong but this kinda thing bugs me to no end. If you aren't part of the solution you're part of the problem therefore if you've seen these things and haven't bothered to take even five minutes to report it YOU killed that fish.

Was that a picture fo two powder blue tangs. One living and one dead?
I hate *****. They never know what they are doing their. The ***** in Allentown on Lehigh St. is the pits. Not one person working in the fish section know enough about the fish they have to take care of them. And they have the worst tanks I have ever seen. They just put in a new tank system and it allready looks like hell. I will not buy fisf from *****. Support you LFS that can provide you with better customer service not corperate fish stores.

This is a same old, same old, unproductive "lets bash *****" thread.
If you buy anything there, you contribute to the issue. Take your money elsewhere, IMO, or stop complaining. Write some letters to people who may make a difference. But these threads, on this board, do nothing.
