Hyposalinity question???

Hi there everyone! I have some questions to ask. First of all Im having a problem with my water beacause everytime i put new fish in the tank after two days they develop white spots on their body. The white spots on the fish looks worst in the morning, days go by its seems to get lesser but same thing the next morning spots show up again. Rightnow all I have is a damsel and a butterfly. The damsel dosen't get whitespots but all my other fish most of them died because of this. Im thinking of hyposalinity method. Im taking all of my liverock out and my inverts. When I do use this method thus it mean I have to do a full cycle again? Is their any alternative to solve my problem? By the way I dont have quarantine tank because I just leave in a small basement suite. My tank is 46 gallon and running a Fluval and Coralife protein skimmer. I have live sand also do I need to take the sand out when i do hypo? Thanksss....

Save yourself the time and effort. Walmart (I'm assuming they are in Canada) sells a 10g aquarium for dirt cheap and other sizes as well. Do a search on here for: QT, hyposalinity, and ich. Lots of good information.
How big of a tank do you have?
Got pictures of the tank and fish w/ spots?

I have a 46g bowfront tank. I got no pics rightnow. The whitespots are just like powder it started on the tail then the fins and in the body. The fish still eats but i dont know if its goin to last.

The tank will not recycle. You may see a spike without your rocks and sand in there. It would probably be easiest for you to set up a qt tank. You said you only have two fish right? You can pick up an aquarium sponge at the lfs and place it into your dt for a few days while you get the qt up and running. Use display water. Also use the filter media from your display tank and you may want to sacrifice a cup of your live sand to the qt. Once the qt is ready, add the sponge. This will give you a good amount of biological bacteria for your qt tank. If you have any questions so far, let us know.

thanks to all your reply. Im getting frustrated with this problem already. I have another question why does my black velvet damsel never got infected by ich? I have him for 3 months since then maybe I lost atleast 10 fish but his still healthy and growing pretty fast. Can fish survive with ich? if there eating healthy?

If they have a healthy immune system and are hearty, they most certainly can fight ich. However, at some point ich will overcome your fish. You saw this when you lost the other ones. Damsels are hearty fish. You have to remove the ich from your display or it will continue to pick off whatever fish are stressed or have a weakened immune system.

thanks for you quick reply.. My other question is how long do you acclimate a new fish? Because when i get fish i just let the bag float for atleast half an hour then slowly put water in the bag and leave the fish their for another halfhour. Thus stress create white spots too??

Well, ich is not "created" by stress. Stress makes fish more susceptible to ich. Ich is a parasite. As far as acclimation goes, drip acclimation is the best method. You place the bag into a bucket and cut a hole it it (if the fish came with enough water then slowly dump the entire contents of the bag into the clean bucket, if not then use a clothes pin to keep the bag from tipping over). Get a piece of airline tubing (the same stuff used for air pumps) Tie a loose knot in it. Suck start the syphon. When the water starts to come out, tighten the knot. Let it slowly drip into the bag. Acclimation should take about 3 hrs for fish, 4hrs for inverts, 5+ for stars or urchins. If the bag is getting full, scoop some out and discard it. Keep letting it drip. Do not pour LFS water into any tank. Once your purchase is acclimated remove him into your tank (hopefully a QT tank!!)

Black velvet damsels are more of a "scaley" fish, if he ever gets big you will notice his scales are very similar to that of a bluegill, the hard scales (which most salwater fish are lacking) serve as a protective layer to not only parasites (ich) but also attacks by other fish. Think of it as a snail in a shell and a snail without a shell. A fish takes a nip at one without a snail, and good luck. A fish takes a nip at one in a shell, and he has the opportunity to save himself because he is better protected.

I wouldn't recomend it because you will have to start counting the time over again. This can lead to the fish that were already in hypo to be in it for an extended period of time. Why do you ask? What is the situation?
