I bought my MH Retro today. Have a question

One of the Reeflux 10K MH lamps has a small piece of glass that is loose inside the bulb. I have not tested it yet as I am not ready to install it. Should this bulb be returned or is it ok. It is just glass, not part of the element.
Also I currently have a single Icecap fan in my current hood that pulls air out the side. On my new hood which is 14 inches tall, will I need more than one fan to cool the two 250 Watt MH lights and two 110 VHO actinic lights? If so, I will put one on each end of the canopy but I am unsure if I use two should the both blow in, both pull out or one blowing in and one pulling out.l
Thanks

that peice o glass is probably there from manufacturing it should b fine if not just 2 cover your ass call the man. let him know about it. I would have the fans draw against each other.

That's normal... Part of the manufacturing process. I can say for the DE for sure. Don't know about SE.
Buy a pair of cheap rubber gloves at Wally world or Hardware store.

Loose glass inside a lamp is normal. If the hood is totally inclosed then one needs to blow in and one out to have the air cross the whole hood. If its open back or you have vents, then they both can blow out.

It's mostly open in the back. The hood is 14 inches high and the back is only 5 inches to offer strength yet leave the majority open.
So with this I should have them both pulling air out of the hood? I've heard of people having both pulling air in to blow cool air across the bulbs and water also.

I would almost always have both fans blowing in, it will cool the water and the space in the canopy better.
It is probably not a huge difference but I did see a small hobbiest do a study on it, they did it three ways,
Both blowing in, both blowing out, and one blowing in/one blowing out, and when both fans were blowing in the water temp and the air temp in the canopy were the lowest.

Thanks Birdy! I was thinking that myself.

I have tried both in and both out, and I have found both work about the same... HOWEVER when I had both fans blowing into the canapy I found alot of Dust colecting on the inside of my canapy and glass tops, I have some open areas in the top of my tank, and thinking about this... :notsure: I do all this cool stuff to try to put clean water in my tank, and now I will take all the dust from my house (yes you have dust too
) and blow it directly onto my clean reef tank...I changed my set-up to pull the air through the open back of my canopy and blow it out the top
. I have noticed no change in temp. but have noticed less dust in my hood..

Well, that is something to consider. I may try it pulling out first and see what my temp runs that way. If it is too high, I'll switch them and see.
