I went to visit my LFS today during lunch and found out that they are selling mantis shrimp for 15 bucks each. The shrimp are contained inside the aquarium in a small containers ... I guess just to separate them. My question is, who in the sane world would buy such specimen ? The next thing I want is a mantis shrimp in my tank ! If I were them, I rather return it to the ocean.

you know my hunch (spelling ?)is that somebody sold them to them and not knowing that these critters' a pest. I feel sorry for the hobbists who would go and buy one of these. I wish I could stand there and tell everybody not to buy those.

I deleted a ******* word in your title of this post.
We know you can't believe it, and neither do the rest of us ...
But, we all need to watch the ******* words we use here - there are children in classrooms that read these posts.
Thanks for understanding

Ooops ... sorry broomer I won't do that again. Thanks for keeping this BB clean. If you happen to pass by the LFS ... please don't buy those shrimps. ;)

I agrew with ed too. Mantis shrimp are awsome, but of coarse only for species tanks. If you have a chance go online and look up these little guys. They come in crazy colors and have lots of different morphologies. I'de put one in a nano and feed it Damsels! I would hope though that the people at the lfs would warn potential buyers of there danger.

um I think at one time SWF.com was selling them & recommending them for species only tanks...the peacock ones...very colorful and a few LFS do sell them...harlequin shrimp are really neat looking too, but are suppose to be specialized eaters of starfish only <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

they are neat, but i do hope the lfs does warn people/buyers about them.
when i was younger, i had my thumb slipt open by a mantis shrimp. i wasnt a happy camper, so yeah i do hope the lfs does some kind of warning, mantis shrimp are neat, but have quite a defensive system that should not be ignored. if it is ignored, only one time is all it takes.

One of the lfs' in town has an acrillic tank with just one -- quite large mantis shrimp - for display. It is way cool to look at. Maybe some people do this? Keep 'em in a tank with LR & sand

there a quite a few people that do keep them. but they are in their own tank mostly small acrylic tanks. less chance of them breaking the tank that way. they are actually pretty interesting critters though
