stick with the 12g tank. if you get the 5 you wont be as happy as you would with the 12. if its a matter of money just save up. until you can get everything all in order. like i had all my filters, substrate, heater, light, msc stuff. before i even bought a tank. but that was how i was doing things. i had my stand built before i had the tank. stick with the 12g you wont regret it.

+1 IMO, a 5 gallon tank is not a good tank at all to start with. Try one of the all in one tanks, makes starting up pretty easy. Biocubes, aquapods, nano cubes, they are all cheap, so just save up a bit if money is the issue.
You won't regret getting the bigger tank.

whats wrong with a 5gallon? im managing with mine so far *knock on wood* I agree that the all in one systems tend to be easier but with some easy modification you can make a 5gallon an all in one with a refugium built in the system (not a hob filter mod). Definitely going to do that on a 15 gallon long when i move to a house after this year of school.

My apologies, I just thought it was your first tank because you are new here. I still say go with a bigger tank that a 5 gallon, but it really depends on what you want in it. A harlequin shrimp species only tank would be a cool 5 gallon.
WELCOME by the way

i agree.... a 5 gallon will be tough to keep because the levels can change very rapidly. but if you feel like you can handle it go for it!! i have a ten gallon and i dont think i could do anything smaller. if you dont want to get the all in one tank go with just a standard glass 10 gallon. i love mine and you can still do alot with it

harlequin shrimp would be so cool, if i could afford starfish on the regular i would have forsure done a little 2.5gallon one. Good luck!!
