i.d. please some sort of crab????

i just found this crawling out of a piece of LR and wondering how it got there and me not see it since i bought the LR.(6 months ago or longer) if anyone knows what this is and is this reef safe??? thanks all

it looks like an anenome crab but i thought those were tiny..?

no they get up to about quarter size.

Anemone crabs are more like lobsters.. they have a tail. Your crab looks like one of the tiny crabs that commonly live in Acropora corals. I wouldn't worry about it. It will either scavenge enough to live or it won't. Not a whole lot you can do about it and it isn't likely to cause any harm to your tank.

I found this pic on another ID site and only got Xanthid species. From the crossbow pattern and striped legs IMO its the same one. Looks scary to me.

Black claw tips are a good sign that a crab is not reef safe. Does yours have black claw tips joe123?

Well, crabs have the "tail" (if you are reffering to the abdomen) too. It is just tucked under the body, and nearly immobile, except for breeding purposes.

But I agree, definantly not white anemone crab. Another thing that is different is tht Porcellanidae (porcelain crabs AKA anemone crabs) only have three pair of visible "legs". Hte crab in the pic has 4.

it hides out in the same hole everyday (unless it comes out) should I try feeding it brine shrimp through a syringe or flake food? its pretty cool. I wanna try and catch it and put it by the anemone(other end of tank) and see if it makes it its host. thanks for all your input keep em coming
