I always recommend checking out that popular auction site for used set-ups and supplies as well as the local classifieds. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying used. In fact, if you can land better equipment for less it is a better way to go. The advice you received is probably based on new equipment and totally stocked but I did not read the threads so I am not certain.
The elitist as you so call on this board log many hours attemptong to help folks and give advice. I am sure it has prevented many mistakes from happening or corrected many that have happened.
Also, if you just set-up a tank it is too early to tell if your method and chosen equipment will equal a success story.
Minimal losses over the long-run equals a success. I equate that with maintianing a tank with minimal loss for years not days, weeks or months.
You can dance in the end zone regarding price if you'd like...but you are way too early to label your tank a success. I hope the elitist will answer your questions when you stub your toe...and you will stub your toe if you are new to this hobby.
There are many views as to how to succeed in this hobby..I am respectful of all. Sorry, but the tone of your post communicates disrepect...whether intended or not. Not trying to flame you...just trying to point out what was communicated.
