I always recommend checking out that popular auction site for used set-ups and supplies as well as the local classifieds. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying used. In fact, if you can land better equipment for less it is a better way to go. The advice you received is probably based on new equipment and totally stocked but I did not read the threads so I am not certain.
The elitist as you so call on this board log many hours attemptong to help folks and give advice. I am sure it has prevented many mistakes from happening or corrected many that have happened.
Also, if you just set-up a tank it is too early to tell if your method and chosen equipment will equal a success story.
Minimal losses over the long-run equals a success. I equate that with maintianing a tank with minimal loss for years not days, weeks or months.
You can dance in the end zone regarding price if you'd like...but you are way too early to label your tank a success. I hope the elitist will answer your questions when you stub your toe...and you will stub your toe if you are new to this hobby.
There are many views as to how to succeed in this hobby..I am respectful of all. Sorry, but the tone of your post communicates disrepect...whether intended or not. Not trying to flame you...just trying to point out what was communicated.

Hello,
I've been on this board FOR A BIT and read every thread I could. Most were telling me it would be >$1000 to set up and succeed w/a 30 gallon tank. Well I got mine set up for <$500. I don't get alot of the elitist on this board who insist on buying Ferrari's when a Honda will do the job. I am a School Teacher w/limited funds. So what?? I got a Seaclone Skimmer and I am man enough to admit it!!! A used filter, tank and stand. I got my lights off ----, live sand from a freind, . Assorted Chems, sand, salt and test kit at LFS. So far, I'm at $350 with $150 left for LR etc. Like my Dad (rest his soul) always said, "If you can't afford Steak, eat Hamburger!!!" I will post pics when the LR arrives. Sorry, had to vent a bit.

Come talk to us in a year
