I discovered why corals are bleaching!

I have a digital thermometer probe built into my ph doser, that reads 23.8 to24.0 C which is around 78F. Well the water seemed warm to me so I bought a cheap little stick on thermometer and it reads 89 degrees after the halides have been off for 2 hours!!!! I have literally cooked my tank but THANK GOD I know why now. I have lost sleep over this, it was driving me insane not knowing. Darn probe thing is calibrated for the ph but definately wrong on temp. Yellow polyps, zoos and green polyps are not fazed by high temps so if somebody wants a tank with no chiller get those corals. Digita frags dont like it at all neither do clams! Man I hope I am not too late for my clam. I dont have a chiller but I am putting ice bags into my sump to bring temp down. Is this going to spike my ph or anything I should watch for? I am so happy to find out the cause. I will report how corals turn out. Thanks to all who were helping me through this. Carrie

I am unplugging the heaters for now, it is still 78 degrees here in Florida. Stupid probe had me thinking they needed to be on. I am going to keep a close eye on the floating thermometer and possibly have to get a chiller. Why did I get into this hobby? First my car and now this tank- oh and where is that thread about stupid mistakes? Carrie

GAH, I HATE THAT!... do you not have fans in your canopy or on your MH so they do not get so hot, and the hot air is directed away from the tank???????
definatly get more if you do, and how high off of the tank are your lights??? what size tank??? lets see what we can do!

Don't cool it to fast. A rapid change in temp can kill just as easy as a high temp to begin with.
I would just unplug the heaters and let it cool on it's own.
IMO.

Unplugged heaters, and putting ice packs in the sump over 2 days has brought it down to 82F I installed a larger fan with the original fan that was on the hood. The larger fan is loud but ohwell. I guess I am in the market for a chiller especially before this summer. Any brands of chillers to look for? Thanks, Carrie
